Teaching description
Familiarity with computers (at least at ECDL level)
The course aims to provide the theoretical and methodological background for skilful use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in historical research contexts with a focus on archaeological applications.
The lectures and the exercises in front of a computer will provide students with a general overview of GIS technology . Students will be able to:
- Utilize the core components and functionality of a GIS
- Employ a variety of geospatial data types, data sources and metadata management techniques
- Create, manipulate, query and analyze geospatial data
The course will consist of lectures and practical tasks to be held in laboratory

The course aims to provide the theoretical and methodological background for skilful use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in historical research contexts with a focus on archaeological applications.
This course will serve as an introduction to GIS technology and its applications to archaeological data management and analysis. Students will learn how to compile, transform, analyze and present sources of archaeological and historical data, and will utilize this information in GIS for cultural resources interpretation and management. References to selected research studies in Classical Archeology will be provided.
